Amber is preparing to take on one of the most ambitious wingsuit projects ever attempted: a flight across the English Channel.
In a recent interview with Radio Skydive UK, Amber sat down with Brian Cumming to discuss the inspiration, preparation and technical challenges behind the project.
The conversation offered a fascinating insight into what it takes to attempt a crossing that would see Amber exit at 35,000 feet and cover approximately 34 kilometres across open water before deploying her parachute.
The project has been years in the making. What began as a dream project during discussions with Red Bull has evolved into a highly detailed operation involving specialist equipment, high-altitude procedures, aviation permissions, weather planning and extensive physical and technical preparation.
Speaking on the podcast, Amber explained that the challenge appeals to her because it demands growth as a pilot.
"This project excited me because I knew that if I could do it, I would need to improve myself as a pilot. I would need to become a better flyer."
The crossing will require Amber to fly for up to ten minutes at altitudes where temperatures could reach as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. To prepare, she has undertaken extensive training in the wind tunnel, tested specialist wingsuit modifications and worked with a team of experts to refine every aspect of the attempt.
One of the most striking moments of the interview came when Amber described the point during the flight when her husband, fellow wingsuit pilot Aspen, will turn back towards England after accompanying her for the opening section of the crossing.
