Hey there, fellow members!
Can you believe it’s already been six months since I took up the role of CEO at British Skydiving? Time flies when you’re freefalling from one adventure to the next!
In these whirlwind months, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to crisscross the country, visiting dropzones far and wide, and engaging in some heart-to-heart conversations with the people who make this sport soar – you, the members, and the dedicated DZOs behind the scenes.
As I quoted Churchill in the annual review, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” Let me tell you, courage is something I’ve witnessed in abundance within our skydiving community. From the adrenaline-fueled first-timers taking that leap of faith to the seasoned pros pushing the boundaries of possibility, every jump embodies a spirit of bravery and determination that’s truly inspiring.
As I’ve jetted from one dropzone to another, I’ve been struck not only by the breathtaking beauty of our aerial playgrounds but also by the unwavering passion and commitment of those who call them home. Whether it’s a clubhouse nestled in the countryside or a bustling DZ buzzing with activity. Each dropzone exudes its own unique charm and camaraderie.
Churchill also famously remarked, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” And indeed, the dropzones are more than just physical spaces – they’re vibrant communities where friendships are forged, skills honed, and memories made that last a lifetime. It’s been an honour to witness firsthand the tight-knit bonds that bind skydivers together, united by a love for adventure and a thirst for adrenaline.
But my journey hasn’t just been about soaking in the sights and sounds of our beloved sport – it’s also been about rolling up my sleeves and diving headfirst into the nitty-gritty of running an organisation like British Skydiving. From strategising ways to enhance safety protocols with the safety team or streamline processes in HQ, to brainstorming innovative ways to grow our membership and expand our reach. It’s been a thrilling ride of challenges and triumphs.
“The price of greatness is responsibility.” And let me tell you, the responsibility of leading this incredible organisation is not one I take lightly. But with the support of our dedicated members, passionate dropzone owners, and the entire British Skydiving team and Directors, I’m confident that together, we’ll continue to soar to new heights and make waves in the world of skydiving.
So here’s to the first six months – a whirlwind of adventure, discovery, and endless possibilities. And as we gear up for the next leg of this exhilarating journey, we move in to the next stage: “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
Until next time, blue skies and happy landings!
